I bought a 1981 GS450S new in 1981. The picture here is not a S version,my S version had gold rims and a quarter fairing. It had 42hp and about 37 at the rear wheel, it could do a quarter mile in mid to high 13 second range depending on the skill of the rider. | ||||||
The bike was overall a pretty nice bike but from the factory it rode to soft and the carbs were way to lean in the midrange. I changed the fork oil to a heavier weight and added dual rate fork springs and air caps. I also added a set of Street stroker shocks and the handling improved greatly. I used Pirreli phantoms on mine at the time. I raised the needles in the carbs to fatten up the midrange lean spot and put a header on the bike. The bike was fun to ride but lacked top end speed but if set upright it handle pretty well for its time, it also got great gas mileage. |
