this is a quick summary of things to look for if you are interested in the 4 speed evo sportsters made from 1986-1990

  Things to look for
the clutch bucket is also the charging system - it has magnets on it and the stator is inside. the magnets are only glued to the bucket - if and when they vibrate off the bike stopscharging and you stop! these broken bits then destroy the stator too. only these sportys had this crappy design - the bucket on mine lated about 55000 miles before it fell apart, but they can go after 20000 or less - beware as they are over Dollars 400 for the part alone. the later ones dont use this idea
other things to look for include leaks from the oul tanks which crack at the mountings - not fixed until 1994 model year.
also, the clutch plates tend to be too small - especially for the 1200 upgrades and you really need the Barnett extra plate kit and stronger spring.
watch out for nthe cam follower in the gearbox also - this is madeof a crappy alloy and breaks, usually jamming the bike in neutral or first. you can get polished steel aftermarket ones
most of the problems with these bikes come from the primary - keep the clutch adjsted, change the primary fluid, and when you change the clutch REPLACD THE CLUTCH BUCKET CENTRE BEARING!!!!
ive been riding my 4 speed for 5 years, and its done over 100000kms
