I would go with the Honda simply because of the price differential. I have an XL 50 (#962) as a third bike that I picked up 6 weeks ago for $5500 and absolutely love it. It is quick and nimble and of course a Harley (which you said to disregard). I now own 3 Harleys but for my previous 130,000 miles was a Honda and BMW rider.
You can not go wrong with either of them but $2,000 is significant in that price range of bike and Hondas are great motorcycles. Went to Alaska and back from Houston on an ST1100 in 2000 so I am very fond of Hondas.
