RE: Acceleration and Fuel Milage

I just got one yesterday, originally Tihitian Red. The previous owner installed a touring trunk intended for a Kawasaki and left some garbage in it. Among this garbage was a fuel log from when he bought it @ 22,000 miles (I´m sorry if you use the metric system, I never learned the conversion factors). I didn´t do the math in detail, but in round figures he was getting around 40mpg at an altitude of 6,000 ft (Colorado Springs). Significant altitudes decrease fuel economy, so below 800 ft should see better economy. I don´t know what grade of fuel he was using, but judging from his character I´m guessing 87 octane. The compression ratio of this bike indicates 91 or 92 octane should improve all around performance. The exhaust is sooty and smells a touch rich. After tuning I expect to get 45mpg minimum.
