Bad Starter, No Problem

I\īve got an \ī82 XV750 in great shape. Second owner. 40,000 miles. Usually starts every time I twist a grip. But just like ALL Yamahas of this era, the starter will sound like a box of rocks, even with a brand new battery. I was once approached at a gas station by an older biker. He commented on my bike and as the conversation carried on I asked him about the starter situation. He said he worked at a Yamaha dealership in 1982 and half the bikes came out of the crate with a started that acted the same way. He explained that I should not change the starter out, that it is 85% just fine. If I replace it, the same situation would occur. Just keep the battery in good shape and accept the bad starter design. In summary, don\īt change your starter on any 1982 Yamaha except in a last resort. Have fun and keep the rubber side down!
